Vehicle Preparations

Matson has stringent requirements for accepting vehicles onto their shipping vessels. Before your vehicle is dropped off at the port, you must be sure that the following conditions are met; if they aren't, the auto won't be accepted for shipping:

  • Vehicle must be in operable condition.
  • Vehicle must have a working emergency brake.
  • Vehicle must have intact -- no cracks -- windshield and windows.
  • Vehicle must have less than Œ tank of gas.
  • Vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned, inside and out.

Additionally, Matson requires that all personal items be removed from the car, truck, or van. The only items allowed to remain are:

  • The Owner's Manual
  • A spare tire
  • A tire jack

If you have a child's or infant's car seat, it may also remain in the vehicle, provided that it has been securely buckled into a seat. Also, if you're vehicle has a roof rack, it may remain in place, provided that it's securely attached to the frame; the same is true for subwoofers installed in the trunk. Under absolutely no circumstances can you ship fire extinguishers or propane tanks.

Information for Matson Booking / Shipping

Note that there are no exceptions: the following information must be provided in order for American Auto Transport AAT to secure a Booking / Shipping Number from Matson for your vehicle:

  • Vehicle License Plate Number
  • Vehicle Identification Number / VIN
  • Vehicle Year, Make, Model, Color
  • Name and contact information for owner and / or person delivering the vehicle to the port for shipping via Matson

Port Requirements

Ports in Hawaii have different paperwork requirements than those in Seattle -- please follow the directions for your specific situation.

Shipping from Hawaii

If you are preparing a vehicle to be shipped from Hawaii to Washington, the state of Hawaii requires the following information be provided when the auto is dropped off at the Hawaiian port:

  • Current vehicle registration, from any state
  • Vehicle title or a letter from the lien-holder
  • Government issued photo I.D.
  • Matson Booking / Shipping Number

Anyone with a legal interest in the vehicle -- like the institution that holds the lien -- must provide written permission for the vehicle to be shipped from Hawaii to Washington. Also, if the vehicle is being dropped off by someone other than the legal owner -- such as an American Auto Transport AAT representative -- the legal owner will need to provide that person with a notarized letter allowing the vehicle to be dropped off. Finally, the person dropping off the vehicle at the Hawaiian port must be listed on the Matson Booking / Shipping form.

Shipping from Washington

In order to ship a vehicle from the Port of Seattle on Matson, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Document showing Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), like Title, Registration, or Insurance Card
  • Government issued photo I.D.
  • Matson Booking / Shipping Number

If the person dropping off the vehicle at the Port is not the legal owner, then the legal owner of the auto must provide a notarized letter giving permission for the car, truck, or van to be shipped from Washington to Hawaii. Also, the person dropping off the vehicle must be listed on the Matson Shipping / Booking Number form.
